Republicans were hoping for a red wave in the midterm elections but it turned out to be more like a ripple. While Democrats breathe a sigh of relief, the threat of right-wing extremism is far from over. Meta is the latest to join the tech bloodbath as it lays off more than 11,000 employees. Elon Musk seems to be intentionally driving Twitter to bankruptcy through a series of chaotic decisions, lay-offs, and forcing key personnel to quit. As FTC keeps a wary eye on the bird site after key security departures, it’s time to ask, what does the tech industry owe workers?  Crypto wunderkid Sam Bankman-Fried’s fortune evaporated after the collapse of FTX, his $32 billion company, sending shock waves through the industry. Reports reveal that Bankman-Fried invested more than $500 Million in Sequoia and other VCs, “The unusual moves show how entangled Silicon Valley VC firms are in Bankman-Fried’s collapsing crypto empire, which has already forced these firms to mark down the value of their FTX stakes—previously worth hundreds of millions of dollars—to zero.” In related news, Mozilla announced this week that it’s launching Mozilla Ventures, a first-of-its-kind impact venture fund, to start investing in responsible tech.  Google unveiled a handful of new tools and use cases during its AI event in New York City earlier this week, including an AI advancement that the tech giant says will improve its ability to monitor and track flooding and wildfires around the world. Google also shared it was expanding the use of satellite imagery to train its models to better identify and track the spread of wildfires.  MIT researchers say they have a way to guard pictures from AI image generators, “but some experts argue that no fix can stop the march of progress.” Here is Ash Sarkar’s take on BBC’s investigation into online abuse, calling it total BS, “The AI appears incapable of distinguishing between swearing used in an abusive context, and swearing used in an innocuous one.”  Resources: Activist research group No Tech For Tyrants (NT4T) releases “Surveillance Tech Perpetuates Police Abuse of Power”, a new report unveiling how police use surveillance technology to abuse their power in the UK and globally.
