Creationists: If evolution is true, rape must be okay

A disturbing look into the minds of Christian fundamentalists: Appearing on Creation Today, advocates for Biblical creationism came to the “dark” conclusion that if evolution is true, rape must be okay.

In a stunning failure of critical thinking, Creationist Derek Isaacs explained to his intellectually challenged cohorts that if evolution is true, rape really isn’t wrong, because it’s all about propagating DNA:

… I studied Darwin, I studied Dawkins, Hitchens, E.O. Wilson, some of the purveyors of evolutionary thought. And they led me to a very, very dark place. ‘Cause you have to start asking questions: Well, if evolution is true, and it’s just all about the male propagating their DNA, we had to ask hard questions, like, is rape wrong? Marriage would be, in an evolutionary worldview, marriage would be the anathema. Because it’s one man married to one woman for life… but according to the evolutionary worldview, [if] that male is strong enough and he had wonderful genes, he should propagate his DNA as much as possible so that the species can progress…

The argument of the creationist is a non sequitur. Evolution is not a moral or ethical theory. There are no ethical or moral consequences associated with accepting the biological theory of evolution.

Human morality is independent of biological evolution. As Hemant Mehta at Friendly Atheist points out:

To claim that without a god anything is morally permissible, and that evolution somehow implies rape is a natural and acceptable reproductive strategy for humans, is preposterous. More than this, it reveals something profoundly dangerous and unseemly on the part of anyone who would make such a claim.

The idea that an imaginary god is the only thing preventing Christian fundamentalists from committing rape and other immoral activities is truly frightening: One day they might realize their supposed supernatural babysitter is but a figment of their imagination.
