Chiqui Esteban named Director of Graphics

We’re delighted to announce that Chiqui Esteban will be our new Graphics Director.

Chiqui has been department head for a year and a half, including four months running the department while Kat Downs was on maternity leave, and is an extraordinary leader, a superb collaborator and a terrific editor. He has built deep relationships with editors around the room and led some of our most impressive visual coverage, including that of this year’s devastating hurricane season. He was hugely influential in the Graphics team’s coverage of the 2016 election, which was best in class. He ran last year’s efforts around the solar eclipse, which included two of our top-performing visual projects of the year, and the Russia investigation, which resulted in several field-leading projects such as our frequently updated piece on the Russia ties of President Trump and those close to him. While running the day-to-day operations of the team, he has still managed to pitch and execute his own powerful graphics. Chiqui is an unflappable journalist who performs at an ultra-high level during intense deadline pressure and despite a heavy workload.

Most importantly, Chiqui makes everyone around him better by demanding excellence of himself and his colleagues. His contributions have been critical to making our graphics team one of the world’s best.

Chiqui is a well-known figure in the international infographics community. His work and that of teams he has led have repeatedly received recognition from the Malofiej International Infographics Awards, the Society of News Design, the European Newspaper Awards, APSE, and others.

Chiqui joined The Post in March 2016 from National Geographic, where he was the Deputy Director for Art, Maps and Graphics. Before that, he was the Graphics Director at The Boston Globe. There, he contributed to the coverage of the Boston marathon bombing that won the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News and the Online Journalism Award for Breaking News. Before Boston, he spent much of his career in Spanish newsrooms known for their excellent infographics, such as Publico, La Voz de Galicia and lainformacion.com.

Please join us in congratulating Chiqui on his new role, which begins immediately.
