This Core Principles of Data Visualization workshop consists of two, half-day, hands-on sessions that provide attendees with a well-rounded introduction to the field of data visualization.
The morning session (9a-1230p) includes an overview of the field of data visualization, introductions to different graphic types and purposes, and an overview of best practices and strategies to creating effective visualization types. The session is a combination of lecture and small-group work. This is a computer-free session: You will not need a computer to conduct the exercises.
This morning workshop will be taught by Jonathan Schwabish, Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute and founder of PolicyViz. Schwabish is an economist, writer, teacher, and creator of policy-relevant data visualizations. He is considered a leading voice for clarity and accessibility in how researchers communicate their findings. His book Better Presentations: A Guide for Scholars, Researchers, and Wonks helps people improve the way they prepare, design, and deliver data-rich content. He is on Twitter @jschwabish.
In the afternoon (130p-5p), attendees will learn how to create interactive data visualizations in the Tableau software tool. The Tableau training workshop includes sample data, exercise documentation (with answers), and final workbook. The format of the workshops includes, “follow along”, “do it yourself”, and group exercises.
The afternoon workshop will be taught by Brittany Fong, a leading voice in the data visualization community and a Tableau power user since 2012. She is the organizer of the the DC Tableau User Group, a co-organizer of the DC Data + Women group, and a Tableau User Group Ambassador (designation given by Tableau). She is on Twitter @BFongData.
